Sponge filters have been around for a long time in our great hobby and have been unchanged for the most part. Until now. We took the idea of the sponge and made it better. A sponge filter works by providing a lot of surface area for aerobic (beneficial) bacteria to colonize and do the filtering of your aquarium water. A typical sponge filter that measures 4″ round and 5″ tall has a surface area of about 50 cubic inches that can house bacteria. Our smallest Hydrodynamic Mattenfilter has a usable surface area of 239 cubic inches! That’s almost 5 times that of a standard cylindrical sponge filter. The filter itself is a 2″ thick black reticulated foam material made in the USA and assembled in Ohio. The foam is equivalent to the Poret foam that other Mattenfilters use. We CNC cut each Hydrodynamic Mattenfilter to size prior to shipping so that you have a nice exact and tighter fit. The filter is designed to fit very tight side-to-side and leave about 1/4″ – 1/2″ gap between the black frame of the tank and the top of the filter. We drill the output holes in each filter before shipping also. You put the lift tube in place, drop the air line in the tube, and you’re set! The lift tube creates enough flow to keep water moving through the filter efficiently enough that you don’t have to clean these but every 6-9 months. The filter works using hydrodynamics, which is a branch of science that deals with forces acting on or exerted by fluids. So what’s that mean exactly? Sponge filters all work the same way which is taking air and forcing it to a point lower than the sponge and turning on a pump. The air creates bubbles which travel up a lift tube and out of an opening. This upward lifting of air through water is what makes the filter work. Our lift tubes are 3/4″ I.D. plumbing to allow the most upward lift within the tube. Because of the extreme efficiency of these filters, there are stores that run heavily populated aquariums with the Hydrodynamic Mattenfilter installed and they only have to clean the sponges about once every six months. *This will vary based on your tank's biological demand.

If you have a Reef Aquarium, chances are it’s got an overflow box and a sump. The most common overflows are found in Marineland and Perfecto aquariums, and this is a quarter circle Cornerflo overflow box. These work great, but have their flaws. We fix those flaws with our Cornerflo Covers. You simply take our Cornerflo Cover and slide it into place over the Cornerflo box! Now, depending on who made the tank and which production run it was, there are two ways (see pictures!) that these will fit. They will either fit underneath the black trim and over top of the Cornerflo (the best way) or you will have to put them on top of the black trim, leaving a small gap which is not good if you have lids for the tank. It may fit on top if it won’t slide into the corner, just not as exact as it’s designed to. We have tested on many tanks and found that it fits the way it should fit about 8/10 times, the difference being where the manufacturer ran the silicone holding the box in. Just super glue or silicone in place with a glass tank, or if it's already an acrylic sump just use Weldon! The 7" single kit comes with the sock holder, hose connector(s) and one 7" 200 micron filter sock. The 7" lid is designed to fit most 12" wide tanks and can be customized with one or two hose inlets (to go into the single sock). Inlet size is 1" by default. A 1.5" or 2.0" bulkhead can be substituted, but there's room enough for only one of those vs. two 1.0".

Aqua-Crylic Copepod Bunker / Hotel
If you have wrasse or mandarin fish, you really need to have a great supply of Copepods for your fish to eat. If you just dump a pod culture into your refugium, sure they may populate but they have to then make it through the sponge, the filter, the pump and back into the tank and settle in there. Chances are, your population will dwindle. Our nearly indestructible Copepod Bunkers are made from ABS plastic with corrugated plastic "rooms" for the pods to settle in close together for increased reproduction rates. When the time comes to get the pods to the main tank, just remove the bunker (keep it in water) and put it in the main tank overnight. The pods will come out and inhabit the rocks and your fish will feast. Or, you can just dump the pods out into a fine net or container and empty that into the display tank. Did we mention these are made from a nearly indestructible plastic? So if you drop our Bunker, no worries! If you drop one of the acrylic hotels though, it has a very high chance to break. Our design is also much easier to take apart to clean and goes back together easily. You can also spin each individual level of the bunker to provide a different look and feel, too!
